Outstanding Staff Contribution to International Education

The purpose of this non-monetary award is to recognize an NIU Civil Service staff member who, over time, has significantly contributed to international education at NIU.  The announcement of the awardee will be made at the Sky Room (Holmes Student Center) during the International Recognition Presentation on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Eligibility and Criteria

Nominees must be current full- or part-time status civil service employees. Previous recipients of the award, as well as staff members of the Division of International Affairs, are not eligible.

Nominees will have made contributions to international education at NIU through public or student service. Their efforts may include the following:

  • Offering active and sustained involvement with NIU Study Abroad Programs, such as advising students on study abroad; engaging returned study abroad participants; or providing significant contributions to the planning, marketing or implementation of a study abroad program.
  • Offering active and sustained involvement with international students and scholars at NIU, including advising, mentoring, or hosting international students; working with international student organizations; or assisting International Student and Scholar Services in their work with international students.
  • Demonstrating significant involvement with international exchange or training programs, including hosting international visitors and scholars.
  • Active and sustained international activity in the NIU community, such as involvement in international events to promote international understanding, or organizing or participating in international activities, projects or programs.
  • Providing continued contributions toward international education and multicultural understanding.

Nomination Process

Nominations are solicited from NIU faculty and staff members, department chairs and members of the Council of Deans. You can nominate yourself or an NIU staff member who meets the award criteria.

To nominate someone, fill out a nomination form. If you're nominating yourself, you'll also need to provide a one-page essay. If you're nominating someone else, you'll need to provide a one-page letter of support. Nomination materials, including any supporting documents, must not exceed five pages.

Selection Procedure

A committee established by the Division of International Affairs reviews nominations and selects recipients. The committee may request additional information or clarification from the nominees or nominators.
